[스포츠조선=이정혁 기자] While iKON is enjoying big popularity with their Japan arena tour, they proved their substantial influence as a “monstrous rookie” by holding a concert at Budokan, the mecca of concerts in Japan, within the shortest period of time since debut for a foreign artist.
iKON drew big attention when they took No.1 on Oricon daily albums chart on the day their debut album “WELCOME BACK” was released in Japan on January 13. Then, iKON hosted Arena tour to perform at Nippon Budokan within a month from then, on February 15. That made iKON set an unprecedented record as the foreign artist who debuted on the stage of Budokan within the shortest period of time since debut in Japan. The concert hall was filled with the heated atmosphere of 13,000 fans from even before the beginning. iKON appeared on the stage with enthusiastic acclamation from fans. iKON fascinated the audience by presenting passionate performances of the songs included in “WELCOME BACK” album, including “RHYTHM TA”, “MY TYPE”, “AIRPLANE”, and “APOLOGY”, as well as the songs they released before debut, such as “Sinosijak” and “Wait For Me”. iKON expressed their gratitude for their first concert at Budokan, saying, “We thank our fans for making us stand on this stage this soon. We’re really happy to have a concert at this place where we can feel the history”. iKON kicked off their Japan arena tour on February 11 at Fukuoka International Center. Then, the tour goes on at Nippon Budokan on February 15 and 16 and then at Kobe World Memorial Hall on February 20 and 21. It continues to Makuhari Messe Event Hall on the 12 and 13 next month and Osakajyo Hall on the 15 next month, to draw total 146,000 fans to 14 concerts held in five cities. The album will include Japanese versions of “DUMB&DUMBER”, “WHAT’S WRONG?” “I MISS YOU SO BAD”, and “RHYTHM TA”(ROCK VER.). Please continue to have interest in us.” (B.I) iKON is a boy band of seven members, which was ambitiously launched by YG Entertainment, a major music label in Korea. iKON members have gone through a long time of training and fierce survival competition. After a harsh training process, iKON finally made debut and received the rookie award right away. It seems that the award bore an especially significant meaning for them. KIM JINHWAN, the eldest member of iKON, said, “Some time ago, our only goal was just to make debut and now, we even received this great award. I can’t thank enough.” iKON took Korea’s music scene by storm with their aggressive debut promotion in which new songs were released every month from September to November last year. Beginning from debut song “MY TYPE”, iKON released “RHYTHM TA”, “DUMB&DUMBER”, and so on, to take No.1 on a variety of music charts and TV music shows. Then, iKON established themselves as the new trend-leader in the music scene, holding a concert at Olympic Gymnastics Arena which can accommodate as many as 10,000 people. JUNG CHANWOO talked about the secret of iKON’s big popularity, “I believe that is mostly because we try to go closer to the public friendly by presenting music of different genres.” iKON has a reliable support from its label YG Entertainment, which is, BIGBANG. BIGBANG also boasted their enormous presence by receiving the best singer of the year awards for May, June, July, August of 2015, as well as Yinyuetai Asia best influence award in this year’s Gaon Chart K-pop Awards. JU-NE said, “BIGBANG is a really good example for us. Because we have such a good example, we always want to be like them, getting encouraged and thereby working harder.” iKON is called a brother boy group of WINNER who debuted after winning Mnet’s survival audition show “WIN: WHO IS NEXT” in 2013. WINNER had received the rookie of the year award in the 4th Gaon Chart K-Pop Awards last year, and iKON received the same award in this year’s Gaon Awards. B.I said, “WINNER member always cheer us up and give us a good support, so we’re greatly encouraged. I think that is why we could make this achievement.” iKON marked a successful beginning of their career with enthusiastic responses from fans. Now, iKON is continuing their performances in “2016 SHOWTIME TOUR”, holding concert in Daegu on February 27 and in Busan on March 5.
iKON will also perform in Japan. iKON’s Japan arena tour began on the 11 this month at Fukuoka International Center. iKON will continue with the tour to hold total 14 concerts in five cities in Japan, including Kobe, Chiba, and Osaka. “I always thank fans who give us a great support. BOBBY recently shot photography for the March issue of “W Korea” magazine. The background of the photo-shooting was the Cheonggye creek and Nagwon Arcade in old downtown Seoul. BOBBY showed off his flagship free and lively appeal in the photography, representing “Youth Culture” that has risen as the hottest topic in today’s fashion world. Notably, answers to interview questions that BOBBY wrote in his own handwriting just as he writes the lyrics for his rap will draw big attention. BOBBY picked “youth” as the word he uses most frequently in his lyrics. Youth was also the theme for the photo-shoot. Then, BOBBY wrote “to become a good rapper, good son, and good myself” to questions about his biggest wish for the year 2016 and the motto for his life. To a question about the musician he respects, BOBBY answered, “I want to have the soul like Bob Marley, rap like Kendrick Lamar, and perform like Michael Jackson.” BOBBY’s photography will be released in the 11th anniversary issue of “W Korea” magazine and the magazine’s official website. 2016. 2. 17. February 6’s episode of “Infinite Challenge” is the show’s second “Meet My Ugly Friend” special, in which the cast members invite male celebrities who are known as being charming even though they are considered by some to be lacking good looks.
iKON’s Bobby is voted by the “Infinite Challenge” members to appear on the show, beating out actor Ryu Jun Yeol for a spot as one of the 16 guests. The crew finds Bobby in a rehearsal space with his group members, and the whole group is impressed to see that he’s getting an invitation from the show. When they all receive their invitations to the show’s special, most of the other guests are less than thrilled, with some of them trying to get out of appearing on the show. In comparison, Bobby and the rest of iKON get excited right away and start chanting the name of the special louder and louder. Although Bobby looks like he tries to get them to stop, the rest of the group keeps celebrating happily. The “little brother” group iKON has successfully held their solo concert drawing about 20,000 people, and the “big brother” group WINNER is sweeping the charts with their new album.
On January 30-31, iKON held their second solo concert at the Seoul Olympic Gymnastics Stadium. They had held their first solo concert upon debut, and it only took four months to hold their second solo concert at the same venue, an unprecedented case in the history of K-pop. iKON kicked off their second solo concert with “RHYTHM TA”. Then, they performed “DUMB & DUMBER”, “APOLOGY”, “AIRPLANE”, “I MIISS YOU SO BAD”, “MY TYPE”, “WHAT’S WRONG?”, “TODAY” and “M.U.P”. They also parodied BIGBANG’s “BANG BANG BANG” and dressed up as girls, sending the audience into a near frenzy. iKON has grown into idols particularly good at giving concerts. Only four months have passed since their debut, but they have already held two solo concerts at the Seoul Olympic Gymnastics Stadium. All the tickets to their concerts were sold out, demonstrating iKON’s huge ticket power. They are indeed “monster rookies” that are equipped with impeccable stage manners, dedication to fan satisfaction, and fabulous live singing and performing skills. WINNER is also doing well. They have released a mini-album titled “EXIT:E” at 12 AM on February 1 after a 17-month break. The album has two title tracks – “BABY BABY” and “SENTIMENTAL” – and all the tracks are self-written by the members. WINNER has succeeded in making a high quality album by focusing on making the album during their break. Even YANG HYUN SUK is satisfied with the outcome. He has given his full support and even carried out pre-release promotion campaign for WINNER’s new album: top musicians such as TAEYANG, G-DRAGON, Zion.T, AKMU, and EPIK HIGH covered WINNER’s new singles. Fans reacted. Upon release, “BABY BABY” took the no.1 spot on the charts of major music streaming websites, including Melon, Genie, Olleh Music, Naver Music, Soribada, and Bugs. Globally, it is no.1 on the iTunes charts of eleven countries and no.17 on the US’s albums chart. It cannot get any better than this. WINNER and iKON are taking the music scene by storm. They are both fit to be called a “monster rookie”. Their fans must be proud. YG-LIFE [스포츠조선=이정혁 기자] “Monstrous rookie” iKON proved their formidable potential once again, selling out all the tickets for their second concert. iKON held “iKON 2016 SHOWTIME TOUR” on January 30 and 31 at the Gymnastics Arena in Olympic Park, Seoul. iKON’s debut concert held upon their debut in October last year at the same place drew a big attention. Their second concert held on January 30 and 31 this year also drew 24,000 fans, demonstrating their big potential. iKON stood on the stage of the Gymnastics Arena again four months after their first concert. Even though it has been only four months, iKON boasted much improved performances. iKON began the concert with by performing “RHYTHM TA”. Then, iKON presented passionate performances of their hit songs “APOLOGY”, “ANTHEM”, “MY TYPE”, “DUMB&DUMBER”, “WHAT’S WRONG?”, etc. Plus, they also performed “CLIMAX”, “JUST ANOTHER BOY”, and “LONG TIME NO SEE”, the songs they performed in “WIN” and “MIX & MATCH”, two survival shows they appeared before their debut. Those performances proved how much iKON has grown so far. The audience who colored the concert hall in red had a special opportunity to witness iKON’s special appeals that have not been unveiled on TV so far. iKON members gave a performance in women’s clothes, demonstrating their humorous and mischievous personalities, drawing out big acclamation from the audience. Usually, rookie singers cannot hold a concert all on their own, because they lack in repertories for two hours. However, iKON held the two-hour concert without any boring moment, with variety of songs and performances.
Beginning from the concert held in Seoul, iKON will continue with their concert in Korea, in Daegu on February 27 and in Busan on March 5. Then, iKON will hold Japan arena tour to draw 146,000 fans to 14 concerts in five cities including Fukuoka and Tokyo next month. YG-LIFE |
